The next day, both GTAForums and the GTA 6 subreddit removed threads featuring the leaked content. As reported by VGC, takedown requests appeared to come from individuals with Rockstar email addresses, all but confirming that the leaks were legitimate. Later that same day, leaked videos on multiple platforms were removed at the request of Take-Two Interactive. The hacker also shared what looks to be various GTA 6 assets, and code from the game. “Here are 90 footage/clips from GTA 6,” they wrote. The leak was from a user named “teapotuberhacker” who also claimed to be the same person who hacked the ride-hailing app Uber earlier this month. The clips also seemingly confirmed some rumors about GTA 6 that were already spreading online, such as the existence of male and female protagonists. Various clips, with unfinished assets, showed off several elements of the game in development including parts of the world, gunplay, and NPC AI. ![]() The leaks quickly spread to other social media sites like Twitter and YouTube. On September 18, it became an unexpected home to leaked assets from the still-in-development Grand Theft Auto 6. GTAForums is one of the most popular online discussion boards to talk about all things Grand Theft Auto. The Leaks Begin: ‘Here are 90 Footage/clips From GTA 6’ Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive and its CEO Strauss Zelnick followed up by saying more of GTA 6 would be shared on “Rockstar’s schedule.” However, with the announcement coming from a press release with no additional materials, it seemed that GTA 6 was still early in development. While undoubtedly still popular, continuing to hype a decade-old game was wearing thin for some fans and the announcement of the next GTA game felt long overdue. “We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”īefore the announcement, Rockstar mainly discussed the ongoing success of Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online, both of which were receiving next-gen updates. ![]() “e are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” Rockstar wrote earlier this year. We’ll update this post with more if and when they respond.Rockstar officially announced the next Grand Theft Auto game on February 4, 2022, in a press release. We’ve reached out to Rockstar owner Take-Two Interactive but did not hear back immediately. The game has been reportedly in development since 2014 (GTA 5 originally launched in 2013) so it would be reasonable to expect development snapshots to be from various builds over the years.Įarlier this month, Rockstar rolled the credits from GTA 5 and GTA 5 Online on its website, titling the page “Thank You,” which many took as a sign that it was winding down active development on the long-running and much-expanded fifth instalment in the series to focus more directly on the forthcoming sequel. ![]() It’s worth noting that these videos likely show an older build, which some indication they could be from around 2017. They also show gameplay taking place in a Miami-analog fictional city, again matching early reports about what GTA 6 will bring to the franchise. Various clips (many are being removed due to copyright claims as of Monday) from the leak depict both male and female protagonist characters, which does fit with other reports about what to expect in the forthcoming game. The leaks themselves appear either legitimate, or fakes created with such a high degree of attention to detail and authenticity that they have won over what was initially a very skeptical GTAForums member audience. Interestingly, the hacker (who goes by “teapotuberhacker” on the GTAForums) also claims to be the person responsible for the recent Uber hack, and says that they got the video by gaining access to a Rockstar employee’s Slack account - which is the same MO for Uber’s massive breach. The trove of data, which PCGamer discovered via a GTAForums post by the alleged hacker themselves, contains some 90 videos of clips from the game, with debug code and interfaces running and helping back up the veracity of the claims. Rockstar’s next installment in its Grand Theft Auto series could be one of the most anticipated video games in existence, and a new purported leak could offer us our best look yet at GTA 6.
